Leaky Taps: A Small Problem That Can Cause Bigger Ones
Whenever you see a leaky tap, you are sometimes tempted to leave it be. After all, the water is just going down the drain. No harm done. However, that’s not true. A leaky tap can cause a big problem if left unattended.
Let’s look at how that comes out in the math. A dripping faucet averages a drop every two seconds. This means that you get 30 drops in a minute. In a single day, that is over 43,200 drops. A rough estimate is that this is equivalent to around 10 liters a day. In a year, that’s around more than 3,000 liters. However, that’s the low end. Some studies say that a leaking faucet can result in around 18,000 liters being lost down the drain. That’s a lot of clean water that could have been used better.
To understand why you have a leaky faucet though, you’ll need to understand the separate types of faucets. There are currently four types: compression types, ball types, cartridge types, and ceramic disc types.
- A compression faucet usually has separate hot and cold water handles. Water flow is controlled by the handles being tightened, “compressing” the opening for the water.
- Ball faucets have a single handle. This moves over a ball-shaped cap that is just above the base of the faucet. You adjust the flow of water by adjust the ball’s position.
- Cartridge faucets can have single or double handles. They are called cartridge faucets because of their use of cartridges to control the flow of water. These cartridges go into the pipe to stop the water flow similar to compression faucets. The difference is that they do not need to be as secure to stop the flow.
- Finally, there are ceramic disc faucets. These faucets use a ceramic cylinder to control the flow of water. Push up or down and the cylinder lets the water through in differing amounts.
What can cause a leaky faucet
There are several reasons why you have a leaky faucet. First, you can have a problem in the O ring of the faucet. O rings are the part of the faucet handle. Constant use can wear it down and cause it to leak water. Another possible reason is that the valve seat has corroded. As the connection between the faucet and the spout, a leaky valve seat would let water through.
Another possible reason is a problem with the washer around the valve seat. Corrosion or improper installation can cause water to leak through. Similar loose parts can have the same results. A dripping faucet can even be attributed to leaky plumbing. There are various reasons for your leaky tap and that can be hard to determine.
